With Eagles, A.J. Brown Split Likely What does it Mean for the city of Philadelphia?

By Will Herbert

A.J. Brown’s time with the Philadelphia Eagles may be rapidly approaching its end. When a player who has been active in the community leaves a city, the ramifications may be felt far beyond the playing field. While no official deal has been reported, June 1st marks a date where the Eagles will have much more wiggle room in maneuvering a trade of the star wide receiver due to Brown’s multi-year contract. Reports of tension throughout the season, along with offseason moves by the Eagles to bolster their receiving corps could be smoke signaling a move is imminent.

However, just over a year ago, Brown was the recipient of the Making a Better Philly Changemaker Award for his community contributions. Brown’s work with underserved communities through his A.J. Brown Foundation was highlighted, and Mayor Cherelle L. Parker was among many in attendance who recognized Brown for his service. Brown had also been a major contributor to the Eagles’ win in the 2025 Super Bowl some months earlier, and all parties were riding high off the success.

Through his foundation, Brown’s impact has been notable in and around Philadelphia. His philanthropy has been largely felt in schools, providing food, haircuts, school supplies and scholarships to students. Most recently, the foundation announced a collaboration with Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia to award two scholarships to student athletes this year. Foundation manager Karrie Crocker declined comment when asked whether the A.J. Brown Foundation would continue working in Philadelphia if Brown were on the move.

According to USA Today, Brown, widely known as a noted mental health advocate, spoke with troubled youth at The Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center in 2025. Earlier this month, his foundation posted to their Instagram page about a partnership with Villanova University for a two-day camp to expose rehabilitated youth to life on a college campus.

“As a city, we need high value people to come in and help the community,” said lifelong Eagles fan Katie Frazer.

This year, the temperature feels much different in regard to Brown and the Eagles. Speculations of internal tension were reignited by a heated sideline exchange between Brown and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni during a playoff loss. During the offseason, the Eagles have signed veterans Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore, traded for Dontayvion Wicks, and used the 20th pick in this year’s NFL Draft to select Makai Lemon, a talented rookie. While these players possess different skills compared to Brown, they all play the wide receiver position, fueling speculation that Brown is on the outs. Newly named Offensive Coordinator Sean Mannion did not mention Brown directly during his recent press conference when asked about the Eagles receivers.

“The negativity didn’t add up, A.J. has still been performing well,” said Sam Kwietniak, a converted Eagles fan as of 2017, adding that he didn’t appreciate the negative portrayal of Brown in local media.

“Philly Sports Talk Radio [stations] are quick to throw people under the bus,” said one fan.

Another stated they thought local broadcasts “don’t have the best intentions for the Eagles organization.”

Others pointed to Brown’s own cryptic messaging on social media not doing him any favors in public perception. Citing posts from Brown that have since been deleted, some fans stated that the encrypted messages left everyone guessing about the desired intent or target.

“I would say not really being clear on what or who he was directing his anger at,” said William Chressanthis, a 21-year-old CCP student and Eagles fan.

The viral moment of Brown reading Inner Excellence, a self-help book, on the sidelines during the playoff run in 2025 will forever be a polarizing moment in Philadelphia sports history.

“I knew this was the beginning of the end of his time in Philadelphia,” said Dejaye King, a 41-year-old Eagles lifer.

“I never really got that impression,” said Frazer when asked whether she thought Brown’s reading was an act to undermine the team. “I can understand why people would think that, because I think there are a lot of people for whom reading is something that has a time and a place.”

When speaking to the media after the game, Brown refuted claims from the TV broadcast that he was frustrated and cited a passage from the book about clear mind and humility. The Eagles went on to win that game, while it’s worth noting Brown was dealing with a knee injury at the time and limited in his effectiveness.

Despite the ups and downs, Brown’s tenure with the Eagles on the field has been a success by most accounts. According to Statmuse, Brown ranks fifth in receiving yards since his arrival in Philadelphia in 2022. He has played 62 of a possible 68 regular season games with the team. During his tenure, the Eagles have made the playoffs each season, and have played in two Super Bowls, most notably winning Super Bowl LIX. Brown has also received three All-Pro 2nd team selections from the Associated Press during his time in Philadelphia. Both Eagles’ brass and A.J. Brown declined comment.

“It’s a bummer,” Kwietniak said about Brown’s potential departure. “Maybe the narratives will drift away and uncover the truth.”
